A RESTFUL STATE OF SLEEP

Ideal Sleep

या निद्रा सर्वभूतानां माता चैव पितामहः ।

सर्वाङ्गस्य विश्रामः सः सर्वरोगप्रणाशनः ॥

This Sanskrit verse describes the ideal sleeping posture in which the whole body rests and which is free from all diseases. It compares sleep to mother and father, as it is essential for the well-being of body and mind.

Habits and Lifestyle of Sleep

Many wrong habits in lifestyle have increased the rate of premature death these days. Sleep activates the body and the important work of regenerating the energy that our body loses during the day is only possible through sleep. The Sanskrit word for night sleep is 'Bhutdhatri', which means 'mother of all animals'. Just like a mother nurtures her baby, this creation nourishes us in a way by giving us rest during sleep. That is why it is very important to get deep sleep at night and to have enough sleep. Sleep is beneficial for health. But it is equally important to take it in the right position and in the right direction.

So Let's See Some Rules About How To Sleep:

CORRECT DIRECTION TO SLEEP:

·     Sleeping with the head facing east is very well understood in Ayurveda. If you have a memory problem then you should definitely sleep with your head towards the east. Experts say this will help boost your memory. Sleeping with the head facing east improves concentration, leads to better deep and restful sleep, and makes the brain brighter.

·     Ayurveda also prohibits sleeping with the head facing west. If you sleep with your head facing west, you will not get deep sleep at night. Vastushastra says that sleeping with the head in this direction can lead to bad dreams and may keep you restless throughout the night. In scriptures too, sleeping facing west is considered inauspicious.

·     According to Vishnu and Vamana Puranas, if you sleep with your head towards the West or North direction, your life will decrease.

·     Ayurveda states that sleeping with the head facing south leads to deep and restful sleep. South has a negative charge and your head is positively charged hence there is a harmonious attraction between your head and the direction. Sleeping with the head facing south creates energy in the body that promotes health, happiness, and prosperity.

·     In Ayurveda it is clearly stated that one should never sleep with the head towards the North direction otherwise it can have great effects on the body. In Ayurveda, it is understood that the magnetic current flowing in this direction can enter your head and affect blood circulation. Along with this, it works to disturb the head. If you sleep with your head in this direction, you will not feel energetic when you wake up in the morning.

·     According to Vastushastra, it is considered auspicious to sleep with the head towards the east direction along with the south direction. If you sleep with your head facing east, you can get the blessings of the gods. Since this is the direction of sunrise, it is considered life-giving.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF SLEEPING ON WHICH SIDE OF THE BODY

Do you know which side or position you should sleep on?

Let's know which side is the best sleeping position to sleep at night so that the food is digested properly and our body stays healthy. If the sleeping pattern is wrong, our body reacts to it adversely. This is because, although our body looks the same from the outside on the left and right side, it is not the same on the inside. The heart, stomach, bladder, and some other organs are on the left side of the body. The direction you sleep (left or right) plays an important role in determining how your heart, digestive system, and brain work.

Why sleep on the left side of the body?

·     If you are sleeping on the left side i.e. sleeping on the Left Side then this side is considered best. Because by doing this, the body also relaxes and has many benefits.

·     There is also a scientific reason for sleeping on the left side. The breath that comes in and out of our nose is called voice. The process of inhaling and exhaling through the left nostril of the nose is called Chandra Swara. So inhaling and exhaling through the right nostril is called Surya Swara. Surya Swara brings heat to our bodies. This helps in the digestion of food. Also, no pressure is felt on the heart. This makes it work smoothly. As a result, it helps to keep the heart healthy. Apart from this, sleeping on the left side has many health benefits. This is why the scriptures say to sleep on the left side.

·     Sleeping on the left side is more beneficial for proper digestion. Therefore, those suffering from pitta should sleep on the left side.

·     Sleeping on the left side helps in the smooth functioning of the heart. Sleeping on the left side is more beneficial for improving the blood supply to the heart. Diseases like diabetes and heart attack can be reduced.

·     If you sleep on the left side, it improves the flow of oxygen in the blood to the various parts of the body and the brain. It keeps all body parts healthy and functioning well.

·     Sleeping on the left side allows stomach acids to flow down instead of up, which relieves problems like acidity and heartburn.

·     The habit of snoring can be annoying to you and to the people around you. The habit of sleeping on the back also increases the habit of snoring. Sleeping on the left side can help prevent snoring.

·     If suffering from asthma, sleep on the left side. Due to this, Chandranadi closes and Suryanadi starts and by increasing the body heat, the phlegm particles in the respiratory tract are melted and the problem of asthma is reduced. It leads to peaceful sleep.

·     Pregnant women: Sleeping on the left side reduces pressure on the back and waist. This improves the blood supply to the fetus. It is more beneficial for pregnant women to sleep on the left side for the development of the baby. In addition, the problem of swelling in the heels, hands, and feet is removed. Sleeping on the left side is also very beneficial for the baby. The blood flow is smooth and the baby moves more.

·     Constipation sufferers should sleep on the left side. You will get relief. Gravity's gentle nudge helps food travel through the digestive tract, clearing the stomach and delivering nutrients to the large intestine.

·     If food is not digested, after eating, sleep on the left side. Since the stomach is more on the left side, sleeping on the left side helps in better digestion and better blood supply to the stomach. Similarly, by sleeping on the left side, Chandranadi closes and Suryanadi starts and Jatharagini is well ignited. This leads to good digestion and early and peaceful sleep.

·     Sleeping on the left side helps in reducing many health problems like joint and back pain as well as chronic pain.

Why not sleep on the right side?

Sleeping on the right side should be avoided. This is called the right lateral position, but should not be slept on. When we sleep on our right side, the lower part of the food pipe or the upper part of the stomach is called the GE junction. Food is gathered there. It may come to the top. Sleeping on the right side may bring up food, water or air. And it can come out of your nose or nostrils while you sleep. Or some of its particles can accumulate in the lungs. This can lead to pneumonia. So generally, you should avoid sleeping on your right side. If you want to keep health problems under control, you should sleep in the right direction, and avoid sleeping on your right side so that your health will be better with peaceful sleep.
