NAIL CARE
PROPER NAIL CARE FOR HEALTHY NAILS
Our health depends on
the cleanliness of our nails. Dirt found in the nails can cause many serious
diseases. The cleanliness of your nails becomes a breeding ground for harmful
bacteria. These germs can enter our body through our food. Therefore, nail hygiene
is important. Hand hygiene is incomplete without nail hygiene. Maintaining good
nail hygiene also keeps the nails healthy. It keeps "food particles, dirt,
and dust from sticking to your nails and bacteria build up."
Avoiding nail hygiene
can put you at risk of infection.
Due to constant neglect
of nail hygiene, many serious problems like bacterial and viral infections
arise. Often this leads to serious health problems. Growing nails is a very
unhygienic thing. Fingernails are prone to germs, bacteria and viruses.
How to take care of nails for healthy
health:
*Avoid nail biting:
When we bite our nails, germs directly enter our mouth and this is dangerous
for our health.
*Avoid Chemicals on
Nails: Using chemicals on nails can cause them to enter the stomach through
food, and these chemicals can cause serious diseases like cancer.
*Go for regular nail check-ups:
If you have persistent nail problems, consult a doctor or a dermatologist.
* Do not share your
nail cutter with anyone as possible, as there is a risk of infection.
EFFECTIVE TIPS FOR NAIL CARE
Nail care should be
done regularly, recommend cleaning with a soft nail brush, especially after
showering and bathing. Nails should be filed slightly from infancy, and
individual nails should be clipped at regular intervals throughout childhood
and adulthood. Dermatologists recommend that people who frequently come into
contact with water and chemicals wear gloves and apply a suitable moisturizer
after thoroughly drying the nails and the hands around them. By cutting the
toenails squarely without rounding them, problems like toenails can be avoided,
said Dr. Ozlem Apti Sengkyon also emphasizes that narrow and hard shoes that
put pressure on the nails should not be worn, that deep cleaning of the cuticle
should be avoided if performing manicures and pedicures, and that the equipment
used should be sterile and personalized.
WHAT DISEASES CAN SYMPTOMS ON THE NAILS
INDICATE?
Dermatologists say that changes in the nails can indicate
certain diseases and the following is a list of those changes and diseases:
Frequent Breaking of Nails: This can indicate a
deficiency of zinc, biotin, B12 and vitamin A, which are essential for hair and
skin health, or thyroid disease.
Separation at The Nail Tips: Psoriasis can be a
precursor to nail fungus or it can appear due to manicure-related trauma.
Vertical Lines: Although healthy nails
may have faint lines, if the lines are clear, they can be a sign of aging, as
well as iron deficiency, the skin disease lichen and the autoimmune disease lupus,
and some joint diseases.
Horizontal Line: Zinc deficiency is seen
in diabetes and kidney diseases.
Pits and Nicks in the Nails: Ringworm, eczema and
psoriasis can cause pits and nicks in the nails.
Pale Pink Nails: In healthy nails, the
nail bed is a vibrant, pink color. Although there may be racial differences, a
pale complexion may be indicative of anaemia or metabolic diseases.
Blue Nails: This is a harbinger of
decreased oxygen levels in the blood circulation. If half of the nail appears
blue, it may be an indication of poisoning.
White Spots: White spots on nails
can be hereditary, but they are mostly related to trauma, zinc and vitamin B12
deficiency.
White Streaks: This can be a sign of
chronic kidney disease or liver cirrhosis. Also, horizontal white lines can be
a sign of protein deficiency.
Thickening: This is seen in
circulatory and thyroid dysfunction as well as skin diseases like nail fungus
and psoriasis.
Dark Red Vertical Line: This is seen in
valvular heart diseases.
Green Nails: This can be seen as a
result of a bacterial infection called Pseudomonas.
Black Nails: This can be due to nail
fungus and the use of certain medications, or it can occur as the first symptom
of a very dangerous skin cancer called melanoma.
Yellow Nails: Stiff and yellow nails
can be a sign of lymphedema, lymphoma, and inflammatory arthritis.
Transverse Groove View: This is seen due to
cessation of nail production after febrile illness. The longer the febrile
illness lasts, the deeper the furrow can be. This can cause the nails to
separate during the growth process.
Spoon Nails: This can be a sign of
gluten sensitivity as well as iron deficiency and nutritional deficiencies.
Club Nails: The most common causes
of clubbed nails, which express cambering of the nail bed, are lung and heart
diseases, but they can also be seen in different diseases such as celiac
disease.
Things to keep in mind while taking care of nails:
● Take care of the
cuticle i.e. the outer skin of the nails when shaping the nails. While cutting
the nails, it should be cut from one side and the shape should also be done
from the same side, if the shape is done from different places, the nails will
get damaged quickly.
● Massage your hands at
least once a week, it helps increase blood circulation. Not only the hands but
also the nails need to be massaged. It also helps in making the nails
attractive along with the growth of the nails.
● Allow the nail polish
to dry properly after applying it to make the nail polish last longer. Then
place in ice water for 30 seconds.
● When the nail polish
starts to come off the nails without touching up. Remove it using nail paint
rim and reapply net paint again. Touching up on the same nail paint can spoil
the look of the nails.
● Use a plastic cap
available in the market to protect long nails.

Summary
Our nails are made of
translucent keratin. A protein that provides support and protection to our
fingertips. Fingernails grow an average of 3mm per month. Toenails grow 1 mm.
Healthy nails should be smooth, hard, shiny, pink in color, and very thin in
children. Care and monitoring of nails should be done very carefully.
Age-related deformities and wear on nails are common. But some changes should
be followed carefully. Because they can be an indication of various diseases; any
change in color, texture, or shape of fingernails and toenails should be
consulted by a dermatologist. Repeated application of nail polish can cause
yellowing and rapid breakage of nails due to the chemical effect. Taking care
of nails is very important. Nails are responsible for your health. But nails
are always neglected. You can even take care of your nails at home or at a parlor
with little expense.
