SLEEP INERTIA
What is Sleep Inertia?
Repeated
body signals of sleep to the Brain, even after waking up is called SLEEP INERTIA.
Waking
up after a good night's sleep surrounded by natural beauty is a uniquely
exhilarating experience for everyone. When we sleep, our brain and body have
time to refresh with mental and physical rest. However, have you ever thought
that when we wake up from sleep, our mental and physical state is a little
disturbed? This unknown and somewhat illustrative state is called "SLEEP INERTIA". Good sleep is
essential for health. It is necessary to feel fresh in the morning after
getting enough sleep. But sometimes it doesn't happen. Even after getting
enough sleep, some people still feel tired after waking up in the morning. The
body works but the brain does not work. Those who experience this may be
victims of sleep inertia. This problem can be not only for adults but also for
children. This condition remains for 15-30 minutes. This causes a delay in work
in the morning. Which affects the entire day. Some people keep tossing and
turning in bed until late when they feel tired even after a full sleep. They
think that if they sleep for half an hour more, they will be refreshed. But
doing so only exacerbates the problem. Where disruptions in routine lead to
disruptions, delays lead to stress. In addition, we go to sleep thinking about
the day's experiences before going to sleep, so mental stress can affect the
quality of sleep.
What
is Sleep Inertia?
The
problem of sleep inertia is due to untimely awakening. When a person is
dreaming in deep sleep. At this time the eyes are rapidly distracted, the
muscles of the body relax and the heart rate and breathing slow down. A person
is in such a deep sleep that it is difficult to wake up even with loud noises.
Deep sleep is called slow-wave sleep. If this stage comes early in the morning
and the person wakes up at that time, it can lead to SLEEP INERTIA.
Sleep inertia can be a big problem. This causes problems for those who have to make important decisions. Symptoms include restlessness, lack of interest in sports or studies, inability to concentrate, inability to think properly, and inability to decide. Due to this, people in work related to quick decision making e.g. Problems arise for doctors, people belonging to the pilot force, students, or those doing driving work.
Sleep
inertia, commonly known as "POST-SLEEP
LETHARGY", is a condition in which the ability of a person's brain and
body to wake up peacefully is impaired, even if sleep ends on time. As a
result, when a person wakes up from sleep, his mental and physical state is
somewhat depressed for some time.
What
could be the cause of Sleep inertia?
Irregular Routine:
Many places these days require 24-hour working hours. So some employees have to work in night shift. In addition, sometimes they work during the day and sometimes at night, which affects the daily routine. If they sleep less for 4-5 days and wish for normal sleep for the next 4-5 days, it will not happen. Using mobile phones late at night affects their sleep which can lead to sleep inertia.Decreased Blood Flow:
Lack of blood flow to the body also affects sleep. This causes daily fatigue and makes it difficult to perform normal activities called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Sleep inertia can also be caused by this.High-Level Delta Waves:
There are 4 types of waves in the human brain including delta waves during deep sleep. Some studies have shown that sleep inertia causes an increase in delta waves in the posterior part of the brain. Of course, the brain has prepared to wake up but the delta waves have not been reduced. In that case, the brain cannot be as conscious as when we are awake, so we remain asleep for some time. The
cause of sleep inertia depends on various factors. One of the main reasons is
the difference in sleep duration and the natural tendency to sleep. If our
sleep duration is long or if we wake up earlier than our natural time, our
brain can go into a kind of lazy state.
Major Symptoms of Sleep Inertia:
The
main symptoms of sleep inertia are the urge to wash one's mouth with cold
water, sleepy eyes, slow waking up, etc. A person may feel that their mind and
body are not fully awake even after falling asleep as if they are still in a
state of sleep.
Management of Sleep Inertia:
A
number of measures can be taken to manage sleep inertia. A POLYSOMNOGRAPHY test is also done to find out what is wrong with
your sleep. This can give the doctor information about your sleeping patterns.
Early bedtime practice can be important. Creating a regular sleep pattern can
be helpful in making sleep periods more frequent.
How
to get relief if you feel tired throughout the day, consult a doctor.
Set
up a routine. Set a bedtime. Stay away from Social Media electronic devices. Before
sleeping don't eat too much at night. Try doing YOGA after waking up in the morning. Sleeping again after waking up
is not good for the body. Before going to bed at night, take a bath with warm
water or wash your hands, feet, and mouth with warm water. Don't look at your
mobile when you wake up in the morning.
Get
out Let the morning sun fall on you. Get up in the morning and go to the trees
and plants and see the greenery. It would be great if you could walk around the
garden for a while.
Summary
Sleep
inertia is another level of sleep that can result from differences in a
person's sleep duration and propensity to fall asleep. Because of this, when a
person wakes up from sleep, he remains in a quiet and sluggish state for some
time. This condition can affect his early activities and cause the person to
have problems in recovery.
