11 Days of Ganeshotsav - 11 Types of Modak

 

LORD GANESHA’S NAIVEDYA AND PRASAD

Ganesh Chaturthi is an 11-day Hindu festival that honors the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom and prosperity. During this festival, various types of modakas, which are sweet dumplings, are offered to Lord Ganesha as a symbol of devotion. Here are 11 types of modakas that you can prepare for the 11 days celebration of Ganesha at home:

 

1. Ukadiche Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup rice flour

1.5 cups water

1 cup grated jaggery

1 cup grated coconut

A pinch of cardamom powder

Ghee for greasing

Procedure:

Boil water in a pan and add rice flour. Mix well to form a dough.

In another pan, melt jaggery and add grated coconut. Cook until the mixture thickens.

Add cardamom powder and mix well.

Take a small portion of the rice flour dough and flatten it using your fingers.

Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery mixture in the center and seal the edges to form a Modak shape.

Steam the modakas for about 10-15 minutes and serve.

2. Fried Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup all-purpose flour (Maida)

1 cup grated jaggery

1 cup grated coconut

A pinch of cardamom powder

Oil for frying

Procedure:

Prepare the filling by cooking grated jaggery and grated coconut together until it thickens.

Add cardamom powder and mix well. Let the mixture cool.

Make small dough balls from all-purpose flour.

Roll out each dough ball into a small circle.

Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery mixture in the center and fold the edges to form a Modak shape.

Heat oil in a pan and deep fry the modakas until they turn golden brown.

Drain excess oil and serve.

3. Chocolate Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup khoya (milk solids)

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1/4 cup cocoa powder

1/4 cup grated dark chocolate

Ghee for greasing

Procedure:

Heat khoya in a pan until it melts.

Add powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Mix well.

Add grated dark chocolate and stir until it melts and the mixture thickens.

Allow the mixture to cool and shape it into modakas using molds.

Refrigerate the modakas for a while before serving.

4. Mawa Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup khoya (milk solids)

1/2 cup powdered sugar

A pinch of saffron strands

1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder

Chopped nuts for garnishing

Procedure:

Heat khoya in a pan until it becomes smooth.

Add powdered sugar and cardamom powder. Mix well.

Add saffron strands and mix until the mixture turns golden.

Allow the mixture to cool and shape it into modakas using molds.

Garnish with chopped nuts before serving.

5. Dry Fruit Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup mixed dry fruits (cashews, almonds, pistachios, raisins, etc.)

1/2 cup dates (seedless)

1/4 cup desiccated coconut

A pinch of cardamom powder

Procedure:

Blend mixed dry fruits and dates in a food processor until a coarse mixture forms.

Add desiccated coconut and cardamom powder. Mix well.

Shape the mixture into modakas using molds or by hand.

Refrigerate the modakas for a while before serving.

6. Sesame Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup sesame seeds

1/2 cup jaggery

1/4 cup grated coconut

A pinch of cardamom powder

Procedure:

Dry roast sesame seeds until they turn golden and release aroma.

In another pan, melt jaggery and add grated coconut. Cook until the mixture thickens.

Add roasted sesame seeds and cardamom powder. Mix well.

Shape the mixture into modakas using molds or by hand.

7. Rava Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup semolina (rava)

1/2 cup jaggery

1/4 cup ghee

1/4 cup grated coconut

A pinch of cardamom powder

Procedure:

Dry roast semolina until it turns golden.

In another pan, melt jaggery and add grated coconut. Cook until the mixture thickens.

Add roasted semolina and ghee. Mix well and cook until the mixture leaves the sides of the pan.

Add cardamom powder and mix.

Shape the mixture into modakas using molds or by hand.

8. Mango Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup mango pulp

1/2 cup khoya (milk solids)

1/4 cup powdered sugar

A pinch of cardamom powder

Procedure:

Heat khoya in a pan until it melts.

Add mango pulp and powdered sugar. Mix well.

Cook until the mixture thickens.

Add cardamom powder and mix.

Shape the mixture into modakas using molds.

9. Coconut Jaggery Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup grated coconut

1/2 cup jaggery

1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder

Ghee for greasing

Procedure:

In a pan, melt jaggery and add grated coconut. Cook until the mixture thickens.

Add cardamom powder and mix well.

Shape the mixture into modakas using molds or by hand.

10. Puran Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup Chana dal (Split chickpeas)

1 cup jaggery

A pinch of cardamom powder

Ghee for frying

Procedure:

Pressure cook Chana dal until it becomes soft.

In a pan, melt jaggery and add the cooked Chana dal. Cook until the mixture thickens.

Add cardamom powder and mix well.

Allow the mixture to cool and shape it into modakas using molds.

11. Kesar Modak:

Ingredients:

1 cup khoya (milk solids)

1/2 cup powdered sugar

A few saffron strands

A pinch of cardamom powder

Procedure:

Heat khoya in a pan until it melts.

Add powdered sugar, saffron strands, and cardamom powder. Mix well.

Cook until the mixture thickens.

Shape the mixture into modakas using molds.

These are some of the delicious Modak varieties that you can prepare for the 11 days celebration of Lord Ganesh. Each type of Modak has its own unique flavor and texture, making the festival even more special and joyful.
