Social media has become an integral part of modern society, profoundly impacting the lives of young people. This phenomenon has been linked to an increase in body Dysmorphia (Dysmorphia or Abnormality is the shape or size of a specified part of the body), eating disorders, and a negative body image among the younger generation. The constant pursuit of validation through likes and comments can further contribute to a fragile sense of self-worth.

Online Harassment and Cyberbullying:

 The anonymity and detachment offered by social media platforms have resulted in an alarming increase in online harassment and cyberbullying. Young people are susceptible to cyberbullying, with negative comments, trolling, and personal attacks taking a toll on their mental and emotional well-being. The widespread sharing of personal information and the ability to rapidly disseminate content can lead to instances of public shaming and humiliation, causing lasting psychological harm.

Impact on Social Interactions:

Developing digital literacy becomes crucial to navigating through the vast amount of content and discerning reliable sources. Moreover, the constant exposure to information overload can overwhelm young.

BE MINDFUL, TALK OFTEN, AND SET RULES:

Ø      Open up a dialogue with your child about the potential dangers and rewards of social media.

Ø      Set limits on their screen time.

Ø      Monitor their social media use.

Ø Help them develop strategies for coping with cyberbullying or other forms of online harassment.

Ø Encourage them to be critical of the content they consume on social media.
